Who is midoriStars?
This is me talking about myself in the third person, so here we go, enjoy:
MidoriStars is the first Romanian artist to write lyrics and sing in Japanese. She identifies either as a chaotic fairy or a cheeky unicorn.
She's a dreamer, an anime aficionado, a music addict, a bubble tea lover who is also a singer-songwriter.
MidoriStars debuted in 2023 with her single Shitsuren (失恋). The video of this song was later nominated at the Japan Indies Music Awards and selected to be part of the Tokyo Lift-Off Festival.
Born in Arad, Romania, she started her musical journey after her grandfather carved her a microphone from a wooden piece. She started more seriously during high school when she signed up for guitar lessons. Later on, inspired by Chris Martin, Midori started playing the piano, the instrument that accompanies her to this day. Her passion for Japanese culture started at an early age. During her years at university, from where she graduated in theater, she signed up for Japanese classes, driven by her childhood attraction to Japanese cartoons.
In 2018, she decided to blend her two passions, giving birth to what we now know as MidoriStars.
FAQ
Where does the name MidoriStars come from?
I first heard the name "Midori" when reading Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami back in 2007, and it stuck with me as I liked both the character that had this name, as well as the colour (midori also means green in Japanese.) So when it was time to choose an artist name, I knew it had to be Midori plus something. The second word, "stars", wasn't amongst the first options that came to my mind, I actually struggled a bit as nothing I had come up with felt right. One random night, "stars" popped into my head, and I instantly felt "THIS IS IT!" I love looking at the stars. When I was a kid, my mom would wake me up in the middle of the night to watch the stars, and she would tell me their names and teach me about the constellations. So when I put "midori" and "stars" together, I kinda felt... starstruck and I immediately created social media accounts with this name.
Who writes the lyrics, and who makes the songs?
I write the lyrics myself, and then I ask either my former Japanese teacher or my friends (Japanese or Romanian, but who speak Japanese) to check them and let me know if everything is grammatically correct and if they make sense outside my head, too.
Once I have the lyrics, I come up with a melody and a chord progression, which I later take to the ARTOnic studio, where, together with Dodo, we start producing the song. Sometimes, I collaborate with other musician friends for guitar parts, a bass line, or strings.
